What did Mercury IT do for the New Zealand Nursing Council of New Zealand to help them deliver new online services to nurses and still maintain their low fee structure?

The Nursing Council is the regulatory authority responsible for protecting the public by ensuring that nurses are competent and fit to practise. With approximately 50,000 nurses practising at any one time the Council manages the largest of the health workforce registries.

Mercury has worked with the Council for many years, our first project was to develop and implement their new registry system.

Next we began work on key web based systems that streamline processes and simplify administrative tasks.

The online processes built by Mercury now cover:

  • Application for registration for New Zealand nurse graduates
  • Application for renewal of Annual Practising Certificates
  • Ability for New Zealand graduates to enrol for state final examinations online.

When the new online services had been in use for some time, we asked how well the system is working. Lindsay Hiener, Manager: Business Development and Support had the following to say “We have had very positive feedback and nurses, of whom many are shift workers, have appreciated the flexibility of being able to engage with the Council at any time of the day or night.”

Another recent extension is the Case Management system to assist the Council in managing complaints and notifications relating to nurses’ practise. The system, links to the core records in the registry system and has workflow features that ensure all parties have the information they need in a timely manner. Records supporting each stage of the process and the resulting decisions can be tracked and reported on throughout the life of the issue.
